Being a “Star”

Posted in Jay's Blog, Jay's Jots by Administrator on the February 25th, 2008

It was a really fun weekend in Vegas.  It was good to see some of our loyal fans, who have been with us for so many years!  My son Jason, and Jimmy’s daughter Sophia, joined us for the “meet and greet” Saturday afternoon. Jason and Sophia seemed to really have a great time, and so did the fans.
David Osmond also joined us on stage Saturday night, and sang a few songs with us. It was fun to see him perform again. He has that confidence on stage that is important to have if you are going to be in front of a crowd.
Someone asked me once, “Isn’t it hard to be in front of all those people?” At first I thought no, but then realized that I have basically grown up in the business, and that confidence in performing came from doing it over and over again. It is like any other skill. It takes work, practice, and determination. The more you do it, the more confidence you have. When you see a so called “star,” you wonder how did that person become known as one? Visibility, talent, and making good career decisions, are the ingredients that makes one a so called “star” in show biz. However, don’t we ALL want to become a star (not necessarily in show biz) in life?
Sly Stone sang a song “Everybody is a Star” This is so true! Within this song, he sings “Everybody wants to shine.”  We all want to be noticed, appreciated, and admired for what we do. That’s human nature. Unfortunately, we have used our abilities to define our identity in a strange way. For instance, someone might refer to himself as a plumber, or a doctor. Another person might be identified as a nurse, or a school teacher. We are a society of “human doings” instead of “human beings.”  We must remember, we are all children of God. Therefore, ALL have the potential to become great! The dangerous part of being human, is when our ego goes beyond the basic needs, and seeks or lusts after the desire to be better and more powerful than others. When this starts to happen, the hidden insecurities take over and disillusion our perception of reality.
Week before last, I made the analogy using the star, to point out the five elements or goals that every individual needs to strive for in order to become a star.  Last week I touched on my thoughts about being socially aware.  I appreciate the comments you left to that post.
These five elements to becoming a star are…
Mentally Positive
Physically Fit
Socially Aware
Spiritually Directed
Financially Stable
Last week, I wrote on social awareness. Next week I’ll speak on being more mentally positive.
I hope you all tune in, and comment on this important analogy that I strongly believe in!
Thanks, Jay

Being Aware

Posted in Jay's Blog, Jay's Jots by Administrator on the February 18th, 2008

Last week I gave each of my kids, and the three families whom I home teach, a plaque of a star with 5 circles.  Each circle contained an area of which (I believe) is vital to create balance in our lives.
For the next five weeks, I want to explain these five circles to you, as I have to my boys, and see if they make sense.
I am starting with the circle called “Socially Aware.”
I taught my two sons Jason and Eric how to drive when they got their driving permits, and worked hard to prepare them for their driving test. My main emphasis was on becoming an “aware” driver. With a little experience, both of them have become skilled in driving. However, I have noticed that each of them have become distracted either by music, or eating, or even texting. Well, to make a long story short, no longer do they text while driving, but we also no longer eat in the car (the music can stay). The more aware of others while driving (I explained), the better they become as drivers.
The same thing is true in a social situation. When we take the spotlight or focus off ourselves, and quit worrying so much what people think of us, we start becoming aware of others.
I will never forget the time when we were at this airport. We were all hot, and I could tell that the patience of everyone was getting thin.  As people boarded the plane, there was this little lady who had this big hand-held suitcase. She was trying so hard to lift it up to the storage compartment above, but was struggling without any assistance. I was way behind and couldn’t reach her, but I asked the person right behind her to please help her. He was wearing one of those funny things in his ear, carrying on (in a loud voice) a phone conversation with someone. He was totally unaware of people (and especially this lady) in front of him.  I am not trying to pat myself on the back for noticing and wanting to help this person, believe me.  I do think everyone of us has the potential to become better people as we become more aware of others around us.  Socially aware!

Being Balanced

Posted in Jay's Blog, Jay's Jots by Administrator on the February 11th, 2008

The theme this month for my family, as well as the families we home teach in the church, is:  Being Balanced.  I think the message of this image I’ve included is a great guideline to being balanced, in fact, I’ve ordered a plaque with this image engraved for each of the boys, with their names in the center
(or you can have your family’s name engraved in the center).  This company has done such a nice job in creating it into a plaque, that I thought if you like it too, you may be interested in contacting them:

In the upcoming weeks, I’ll share some discussion on each of the components described in this image – which when combined, help us to have balance in our lives.

Jason’s Jots!

Posted in Jay's Blog, Jay's Jots by Administrator on the February 3rd, 2008

Hello everyone, this is Jason. Dad couldn’t write this week, because we are on a cruise and I completely wore him out. HA!  I made him jog more than 13 miles over the course of the 10-day journey across the Caribbean, and he is exhausted, but he doesn’t regret it either. He told me he has never felt so rejuvenated in his life, and it made me realize the importance of exercise. He is so sore and can barely walk…and he has to do a show tomorrow. I wish I had a video camera baby, because this is going to be the funniest show ever….poor guy! HA HA!  Anyway, he sends his love, and challenges everyone to go run a couple miles as soon as you’re finished reading this. ;-)

I wanted to make an announcement that preparation for my mission is going well, and thank you all for your letters and your love.  There will soon be a new link from my dad’s website all about my mission and what I’m up to. I am also opening up a store that will offer a bunch of fun Jay Osmond stuff, and some of my art. So, if you’re interested, you should check it out!  I also plan to have a blog where you can leave comments. It will be really fun to hear from all of you, and get to know you better.

If you watched the Super Bowl, I hope you had fun…oh, and GO ROMNEY!  ;-)
Sincerely,
Jason Osmond
